UBL’s Responsible Drinking campaign won the award for Best Concern for Consumer Issues at the 2016 Uganda CSR Awards organized by Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) and GIZ.

The award`s aim is to encourage private sector organizations (regardless of their size) in Uganda to carry out sustainable activities and to increase the recognition of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) principles in their operations. CSR is more than a philanthropic approach; it is about doing business in a sustainable way that will bring about sustainable development. By integrating CSR into business strategies organizations can strengthen their core business, get a competitive advantage and at the same time, contribute to the country’s overall development.

This year’s award brings the total of awards on Responsible Drinking to three in the past three years. In 2013, the campaign was awarded for the Best CSR Campaign in the 1st CSR Awards and last year the RED CARD campaign to drink driving won the award for Best Social/Digital Campaign in the Public Relations Association Uganda (PRAU) Excellence Awards 2014/2015. “By being mindful of our consumers and the society’s welfare, we have touched the lives of many with our messages and we are glad to be playing a role in promoting responsible drinking”, said David Onyango, UBL’s Corporate Relations Manager. “At UBL, doing good is good business and so we will continue to do our part in encouraging responsible consumption of alcohol to adults who choose to drink while discouraging underage consumption”, he added. Running for the last 5 years, the campaign tackles the issues of underage drinking and driving under the influence of alcohol. The campaign against underage drinking entails advocacy engagements and evidence driven communications to the youth, teachers, parents, religious and political leaders and local government officials. The main objectives of the underage campaign are:
• Advocating for measures to regulate underage consumption.
• Strengthening the engagement of young people in constructive social and economic activities to reduce underage alcohol consumption.

The campaign against drunk driving is a multi-media campaign that entails messaging across all media platforms as well actual engagements with the consumers at public events points of purchase and consumption as well as equipping bartenders and bar owners with skills and knowledge on responsible serving.
